Know the warning signs

  • 1
    A new or growing lump
Especially one that's getting bigger or is deep under the skin.
  • 2
    Persistent bone pain
Lasting pain or swelling that doesn't settle, sometimes worse at night.
  • 3
Don't wait — get it checked
If something feels off, act early. A quick check could make all the difference.

Sarcoma is a rare group of cancers that develop in the body's connective tissues, including bones, muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and cartilage. Unlike more common cancers that begin in organs such as the breast, lung, or colon, sarcomas can occur almost anywhere in the body.

Sarcomas are considered rare, accounting for less than 1% of all adult cancers. Although uncommon in adults, they make up about 15–20% of cancers diagnosed in children and adolescents. There are more than 70 different subtypes of sarcoma, making diagnosis and treatment more complex.

Because sarcomas are rare, early symptoms are often overlooked. Common warning signs may include:

  • A painless lump or swelling that continues to grow
  • Persistent bone pain, especially at night
  • Unexplained fractures
  • Ongoing pain or swelling in a limb or other part of the body

The exact cause of most sarcomas is unknown, but certain inherited genetic conditions, previous radiation therapy, and exposure to specific chemicals may increase the risk.

Early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes. If you notice a lump that continues to enlarge or persistent unexplained pain, it is important to seek medical evaluation promptly.

Remember: While sarcoma is rare, awareness and early medical attention can make a significant difference in successful treatment and recovery.
